Aliza Bulow, a returning guest, shares the path that led to her conversion to Judaism with us, an in depth conversation about finding belonging in our community, and the love, respect and trust she shares with her husband, despite his late-in-life rejection of their religion. Aliza previously shared her journey through her son’s depression and eventual suicide in, part 1 here and part 2 here.As a young teenager, Aliza was unsettled with her parents’ religious views, and searched for truth and peace. She studied different paths before finding a book on Judaism in her middle school library and immediately felt at home and wanted to convert. The local Rabbi told her she was too young to convert, but that she should go to camp where she ate up every opportunity to learn. Aliza’s parents supported her exploration, and off she flew over the North Pole to Israel at 16 years old to see if anyone could tell she was a convert, where it was immediately obvious that she had not been born Jewish, having a last name of Beech from the city of Portland, Oregon.It took time and a great deal of learning to feel that she could claim to be a part of her new community. However, as her kids and grandchildren are born into it, their family feels more established in the community. Becoming a leader has given her a purpose among the people. Aliza still feels like an outsider looking in at mainstream Orthodox Judaism since she believes that she was not made to follow practices commonly held, but to connect herself and other people to Hashem, and to each other, to strengthen the Jewish community so it can shine brightly and cause others to want to join too. Her goal is to guide others to the truth of who God is.As a convert, she has a different perspective on everything. She didn’t learn or pursue out of obligation or because it’s what “everyone else” was doing. It was all fresh; it was all new. An average Jewish person may not have noticed what she sees because they often see commonly-held perspectives.Her marriage to someone who left Judaism leaves no correct answer on how to deal with such a situation. When tragedy struck her family and her husband left their shared spirituality, they choose to cling to each other through the hardship, without judgment through the grieving process. While Aliza is sad that her husband turned away from God, he supports her in her choice of practicing religion, despite his aversion to it. He works hard to provide enough money for kosher food, eats kosher cheese and is supportive of her dreams to change the world with Hashem. While it is challenging to be disconnected from a spouse because of nonparallel beliefs, there are many married couples who do share their faith but still don’t share a spiritual connection. Growth and appreciation are a constant and required focus to continue along the journey of recovery and noticing the little details are a critical tool to developing a healthy gratitude mindset. Awareness can be fickle if it isn't well defined and intended for long term internalization.Awareness is only successful if we make a commitment to take the required next steps to living a better and healthier life. Each person's journey to recovery is unique and is every therapist's session. As Matana faces different hectic life events, she navigates from important to more important. Often, we neglect important items for things that are more important, and that's ok. Feeling unaccomplished or missing out on goals can often lead to disappointment but we need to also focus on downtime. Critically important for maintaining proper mental health, taking the time we need to reflect, relax or focus is also needed for continued energy.When we need to, choosing ourselves over others isn't selfish, but is self preservation. When we do get set back, feeling the pain, struggle or anxiety is part of being human and a lesson to learn from, so we can understand why. We're human an are programmed to want things in our life. Some people want happiness, others seek weight loss, better sleep, reducing stress, financial success or a healthy mindset. We yearn and it often consumes us. When we receive that which we so desperately seek, how do we react? Do we utilize gratitude? Many of us do, but is the gratitude expressed, proportionate to the intensity of the original yearning?Everything in life is in degrees of frequency, duration, and intensity. Even healing is measured in these terms. We often look for absolutes. Am I completely healed? More often than not, complete healing is the end goal but not easily reached. Revisiting Finding Support in your Mental Health Journey (Solo) Part 3

Children with OCD and anxiety need their parents to understand that they feel terrified. They need their parents to express confidence in their ability to face their fears. What they don't need is for their parents to do everything for them when they're afraid because over time, they will need to learn how to deal with their fears when their parents aren't around. Dr. Lebowitz’s book, Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents, provides a roadmap for how parents can successfully guide their children to overcome their fears. The way parents accommodate their own OCD, severe anxiety or phobias can have an extremely negative impact on their children. Many people use rituals for years and do not seek therapy until they see what their habits are doing to their children.The difference between a quirk and a disorder has to do with how much of a negative impact the particular way you want to do things has on your life.A child not attending school because of their fears, someone is unable to sleep or eat, behaviors which strongly affect relationships are generally examples of a disorder. Getting help with problems causing smaller amounts of distress will improve your current life and may prevent the quirks from developing into disorders According to Dr. Lebowitz’s research, the best way to respond to a child who is experiencing anxiety is to first validate their experience and provide confidence. If your child is experiencing a full-blown panic attack, there's not much to do, except wait it out and remain calm.Children who grew up without any serious anxiety and suddenly develops a very intense fear, often had a traumatic experience that will require more support and a different kind of therapy. In part 2 of our talk with Alana Shlagbaum, who is not a therapist, doctor or any kind of health expert but a preschool teacher from New Jersey, Matana shares her own personal story with Alana, of how miscarriage and living with chronic bleeding prevented her from becoming pregnant.After having her first son, Matana went on birth control. During that time, she also lived with  chronic feminine bleeding which got worse after her third child. Due to Jewish law, she was unable to physically be with her husband unless she had stopped bleeding and undergone ritual bathing, but her bleeding did not stop. Additionally, her mind and body did not respond well to the strong hormones she was taking. She wanted to travel to a family event without bleeding, so she doubled my birth control that weekend, which put her into a full panic attack that kick-started her massive depression. After that, she dealt with several miscarriages and finally found an alternative hormonal birth control. She unknowingly got pregnant for her last time in my forties, Thank God without any issues, despite her intense fear. It had been a journey full of many tears, hard work, and much growth.Many women suffer through challenges like these silently and alone. Both Matana and Alana want you to know that you're not alone.
