NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is the solo project of Portland singer Anaïs, a fresh start after the dissolution of their previous project Cry Babe. Cry Babe had been the inspiration for some characters in the film 'Somebody That I Used to Know' starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and when the two writer/actors suggested they would come to see a show, that provided Anaïs the impetus to form this new band. The record is a beautiful combination of sing-along anthems and emotional catharsis.
Their debut as NONBINARY GIRLFRIEND is 'Big And Kind,' available on Bandcamp.

On the show this time, it’s the soulful humanity of Kurdish-Turkish vocalist Aynur. Aynur is a musician from Turkiye, and a Kurdish musician. She applies her breathtaking vocal technique to a refreshing blend of 300 year old Kurdish folk-songs, and her own jazz and pop influences. She is not afraid to address the suffering of the Kurdish people, or the struggles facing women - so much so that her music has at times been banned, her life has been threatened, and she has migrated as a result.
Yo-Yo Ma said “To hear Aynur’s voice is to hear the transformation of all the layers of human joy and suffering into one sound. It reaches so deep into our soul, tears into our hearts, and then we are for one moment, joined as one. It is unforgettable!”
Her latest album, 'Hedûr - Solace of Time,' is available through The Orchard distribution.

Deerhoof has existed in its current incarnation since 2008, a four piece with Greg Saunier on drums, Satomi Matsuzaki on most vocals and bass, John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez on guitars.  Every member can and does sing, and also write. The original version of the band started in 1994 in San Francisco! They are beloved by fans and fellow musicians alike. They are a prototypical DIY band. They are original, playful, thoughtful, and political. They should be in the dictionary under the word “band.” Their latest album “Miracle-Level” is available on Joyful Noise Recordings. As the label notes on their website - “It’s the band’s 19th album and the first to be produced, recorded and mixed entirely in a recording studio. All of the songs are in Japanese.

On the show this time, it’s the Mexican-American indie-folk of Portland’s Y La Bamba.
Y La Bamba is the band name of Luz Elena Mendoza-Ramirez. They’ve been making music since the mid 2000s, starting out like many a great band - playing the open mics around their part time hometown of Portland Oregon. Over the years the band has changed, but the community around it has only grown. They’ve worked with folks like Chris Funk from the Decemberists, Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, and Sergio Mendoza from Calexico. They’ve toured with Neko Case and the Lumineers. They’ve hit the Billboard Latin Pop charts, NPR’s top lists, and stolen the hearts of every independent radio station that took the time to listen. Their latest album, 'Lucha,' is available on Tender Loving Empire.

On the show this time, it’s the spell-binding heavy-rock of All Them Witches.
All Them Witches is a band whose fans will show up. It appears that once you fall in love with their long form explorations of time and space, you will follow them to the ends of the earth. They play blues, transmuted. They can shift effortlessly from spooky R&B to heavy metal to epic psych-rock. Rhythm holds it all together, but any of the individual musicians can wander off into improvisation - safely cradled in the communal groove. They recently put out 'The Baker’s Dozen' - one song for each month of the year, plus one for safety - released on YouTube. They’ve been playing multi-night-in-one-city sold out shows supporting their latest album - 'Nothing As Ideal.' It was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios, and is available on New West Records.

On the show this time, it’s the collaborative Mali meets world music of Vieux Farka Touré.
Vieux Farka Touré has released 7 studio albums since his debut in 2007. He’s shared stages with and collaborated with a slew of great musicians - from Amadou and Mariam to John Scofield and Dave Matthews. He’s played with slide virtuoso Derek Trucks and with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder. He formed another band with Israeli singer Idan Raichel. He performed at the World Cup alongside Alicia Keys and Shakira. He’s clearly earned the right to be reviewed without mention of his father. But - he’s got the maturity to enjoy his connection to family and history. His latest album is named “Ali.” It’s another collaboration - this time with Texan psych-rock meets hip-hop trio Khruangbin - all covers of songs by his Dad. It’s available on Dead Oceans.

On the show this time,  it’s the dark-noise rowdy-rock of Sydney duo - Party Dozen.
What is a dozen but a larger version of a duo? 2 but turned up 10. Then on top of that, why not make it a party dozen? One more than 11! The Sydney duo of Kirsty Tickle on saxophone and Jonathan Boulet on drums and sampler most definitely bring the noise and make the party happen. Their live shows are incendiary, and their commitment to experimentation and improvisation exacerbates the danger. They’ve been at it since 2017, and released their third album (featuring Nick Cave on one track!) 'The Real Work' on Temporary Residence Ltd in 2022.

Rose City Band is the latest project of singer and guitar-wizard - Ripley Johnson. It’s psychedelic country rock - summery, familiar, and comforting. It avoids becoming lost in the morass of bar-band humdrum by simultaneously being truer to its references - and manifesting an indie-original vibe that sounds fresh. With a flexible lineup - drums, bass, guitar, keys, and pedal steel - and hella musicians at each position, the band breezes through each number with such mastery that you find yourself relaxing. It's gonna be ok. They’ve got you. Dance. Sit by the window. Whatever you need, friend.
Their latest record is 'Garden Party' - available on Thrill Jockey and Jean Sandwich Records.

On the show this time, it's the code-switching pop-pastiche of Caroline Polachek. 
Caroline Polachek returned to KEXP to play songs from her newest record ‘Desire, I Want To Turn Into You’ available on her own imprint “Perpetual Novice.” It opens with some gloriously over-the-top vocal acrobatics. A call across the ocean? A wail of anguish? A howl of desire? Maybe more directly an announcement and a warning - “I AM HERE.”
Without warning she flips the switch and bang! we are into the deadpan “Welcome to my Island” hook, and a beat that could be described as “Don’t you forget about the Soul-Sonic Force.” From there the music flows seamlessly through genres, styles, decades, vibes - anything goes, and Caroline Polachek’s encyclopedic knowledge of (and love for) music, unifies the experience.
