Ep. 20 - Equine Dentistry - Most Commonly Asked Questions with Allie Lait, EqD, RVT

Dr. Travis Kelter wrapped up our Virtual Lecture by presenting on an issue we are seeing more and more in horses - Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS).

EMS is a characteristic collection of clinical signs in horses that put them at high risk for developing laminitis. A key feature of EMS is insulin dysregulation and results from interaction between genetics and environment. Risk factors also include abnormal fat distribution, predisposition to weight gain and resistance to weight loss, among others.

Dr. Kelter's presentation walks horse owner's through the many layers of EMS - insulin dysregulation, obesity, the clinical signs, consequences of unregulated EMS, breed dispositions and genetics, as well as dietary management and medication available.

On Episode 16 we kick off a two-part series on how to optimize your equine athlete's gut health through nutrition. In the seventh episode of Riding To Excellence we kick off the podcast by introducing our listeners to the latest veterinarian to join the Energy Equine team, Dr. Matt Mundy! A southerner, by way of Ontario, Dr. Mundy is a fantastic addition to our team, and despite being a little nervous to come onto the podcast, we think he did a great job.

Then we segue into the bulk of the podcast - winter wellness. This deep freeze Alberta, and most of Canada, and the USA, has been experiencing has equestrians feeling particularly chalk full of cabin fever and worried about their horse's health and wellness. Dr. Hewlett and Dr. Mundy take your questions via social media on how cold is too cold, water and nutrition in the winter, trailering, blanketing and so much more.

On this episode we talk with Brigitte about how she got started in the industry, what an equine massage therapist does, as well as the connection between chiropractics and equine massage. Then we delve into the "meat" of the podcast hip extension in the performance horse! Brigitte educates us on the main muscles that make up the function, common injuries to the area, how to prevent injury to this area and which equine athletes commonly deal with tension in the hip extensors. Plus, we maybe throw out some pop culture references as well - just to keep it fresh!
