Gay, who holds doctorate degrees in ecology and psychology, has been sharing cultures and homes with Animals all her life. For the past twenty-five years, her work has been dedicated to the self-determination and well-being of Wildlife and domesticated Animals. Her diagnosis of Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) among free-living African Elephants sparked a new paradigm of understanding, trans-species psychology. Since 2002, Gay has studied and practiced mindfulness and meditation, and created Nature Mindfulness™ teachings where Animals, Plants and other Earth Beings are active partners in humanity’s evolution of consciousness. This work led to the founding of her nonprofit, The Kerulos Center for Nonviolence (www.kerulos.org), a teaching center and sanctuary located in Southern Oregon, U.S.A that translates principles of Nature Consciousness into everyday living.

#833 Neuroscientist Joe LeDoux PhD on Putting The Mental Back into Mental Health and More

Avgi Saketopoulou is a psychoanalyst and professor who works with transgender kids and their families.

Rather than buy into the notion that trauma can be cured, she reroutes our attention to what traumatized subjects do with their pain. Those who surrender to the fact that their pain cannot be eliminated, she argues, are sometimes able to do things with trauma.

In this radical alternative to thinking about racialization, consent, and trauma, Avgi dares us to step into a different territory, where we do not guard the self but risk experience.

On her website, she describes her work in the following terms:

"In my office, located in Union Square, I treat children -as young as age 3- adults, couples, and polycules. I work with a wide array of issues, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties, and have extensive experience with variant genders, in both children and adults, and queer sexualities. My practice includes a racially and ethnically diverse range of individuals.

I trained as a clinical psychologist in NY after having moved to the United States from Greece and Cyprus. I subsequently completed training as a psychoanalyst at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

​As part of my academic work, I teach at the NYU PostDoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. I am also on the faculties of several other psychoanalytic institutes, such as the William Alanson White Institute, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the Stephen Mitchell Relational Center, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, where I offer intersectionally-informed courses on psyhosexuality and gender.

I also contribute to my field by publishing my own research; by serving on the editorial boards of several academic journals; by leading study groups; and by supervising colleagues' clinical work. #832 Psychoanalyst Avgi Saketopoulou on Sexuality Beyond Consent

Dr. Shaw has undertaken a lot of research on moral injury, which is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when that person perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral beliefs, values, or ethical codes of conduct.

Most research to understand moral injury has been with military Service Members and Veterans, as the nature of war and combat create situations where people may have experiences that contradict the values they live by in civilian life.

Examples of potentially morally injurious events in the context of war include killing or harming others, when officers have to make decisions that affect the survival of others, and when medics are not able to care for all who were harmed in a conflict.

The mission of the Great Philosophical Problems thinktank is to provide a unifying definition, and accompanying phenomenology, for the construct of Moral Injury to address suicide in veteran and wider civilian populations. Like the social lexicons provided by PTSD, they set out to provide the moral grammar for the “Signature Wound” of contemporary war.

Dr. Shaw is currently working with the head ethicist at The US Army War College, Dr. Timothy Mallard, on a submission for the Australian Royal Commission Into Defence and Veteran Suicide to launch the international definition of Moral Injury.

Dr. Shaw has a Ph.D. in Moral Injury and a Research Master's investigating the implications of Just War Theory. He has taught ethics at the University of Sydney and is also a leading voice in the critique of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas and the Just War Tradition.
