They are employer, location and job specific. Kimberly details how there is an annual quota for new H-1B visas – 85,000, including 20,000 reserved for individuals with US Master’s degrees Because there are a limited number available each year, USCIS holds an annual lottery:    The Lottery is a two-stage process – application and selection Application – Electronic application period, only open for two weeks in March Selection – Selections occur between April and September, until all 85,000 visas are allocated.    Certain Employers are Exempt from the annual H-1B Lottery – exempt from the annual “H-1B CAP," includes:      Institutions of Higher Education (20 U.S.C. 1001(a)) Non-Profit Research organizations Non-Profit organizations affiliated with an institution of higher education Government research organizations Employers who are employing staff working at one of the qualifying organizations above      Now is the time to prepare for the H-1B lottery. If you miss this year’s lottery, you will not be able to try again until March 2024.

TVR 1/8/23: TechVibe Neighborhood Tour Features Thoro.ai

Jeanne Berdik and Anne Crawford, Co-Directors of The Pittsburgh Chapter of the ARCS Foundation stop by TechVibe Radio to tell you how the organization sustains the best emerging scientists, by providing financial support to the most promising graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.  Since the chapter’s founding in 2003, it has grown from a dedicated core of women, supporting a single scholar, to a vital group of nearly 120 members.  It has provided three-year awards to 157 scholars. The aggregate of paid or pledged awards through 2023 totals over $2.2 Million, which includes $75,000 to be paid through the recently established CMU endowments. As a chapter, however, ARCS believes that its mission goes beyond mere check-writing.  Members also believe that advancing science in America requires us to support our scholars with more than just funding.  A key emphasis of its initial membership was to introduce the scholars to opportunities in the Pittsburgh region and encouraging these brilliant young scientists to seek their fortune here (as our forebears did with such great success).

Jessica will detail how the research center will invite collaborations with faculty, students and staff from across the university. When Jonathan Kersting started this series off last year at this time, he recounted his experience getting to know Dr. Giorgio Coraluppi, the Founder of Compunetics, Compunetix and Chorus Call. The day before  he began to write this final installment of the PGHTech 25 series, Dr. C. passed away at the age of 88. The passing of Dr. C. made Jonathan change course a little to use his final installment of this series to look into the future. From that hackathon, she founded Behaivior as an artificial intelligence startup company which uses machine learning and automated just-in-time intervention to solve the problem of addiction. With an ever-increasing number of wearable health monitors at our disposal, Behaivior is using them to alert a patient if a relapse is imminent! In fact, Ellie and her team’s work was recently named a Top 10 team in the third and final round of the $5 Million IBM Watson AI XPRIZE. Talk about the potential to save lives! It blows my mind. Martin Shepherd, Arch Access Controls and EARN By day, Martin is CEO of Arch Access Control, a cybersecurity governance and compliance provider. It specializes in identifying cyber risk, creating a plan that prioritizes those risks, and provides solutions necessary to remediate risk. By night (and day, too) Martin is one of the founders of the Executive Action & Response Network (EARN), an initiative aimed at stemming racism and improving quality of life for African Americans. The initiative stems from three key inflection points: The murder of George Floyd that set off a wave of social justice actions across the country; the Covid-19 pandemic that significantly hurt many Black-owned businesses; and Pittsburgh’s 2019 Gender Equity Commission report, which revealed inequities across education and the workforce in the city. PGH Tech 25: The Next Generation of Tech Leaders in Pittsburgh

Eryn Correa is a Founder and Managing Partner of Correa Legal, a law firm that provides cost-effective legal solutions to entrepreneurs from concept to scale. Eryn's journey to hang her own law shingle with a specialty in social venture partnerships is an amazing story of stepping back from a fast-paced career and doing something totally different. As an associate attorney in Alcoa Corporation's Corporate Secretary's Office focusing on securities and board governance, Eryn thought she had the career that she always wanted. But something was missing. To figure it out, she stepped back and took a job as a barista at a Pittsburgh coffee shop just as the Covid Pandemic hit.
