Howard Pyle was first and foremost an artist. He taught for several years at what became Drexel University, and many noteworthy artists studied under him, including N.C. Wyeth and Frank Schoonover. Pyle is credited with establishing what has come to be known as the modern stereotype pirate attire. Since there wasn’t much to draw upon as far as historical documentation as to what pirates actually wore, Pyle borrowed largely from gypsy garments and styles to create the pirate look we know today. It’s been criticized as being wildly impractical for actual sailoring. He wrote and illustrated several books for young adults, including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and a four-volume set on the life of King Arthur. He breathed new life into children’s literature, bringing a solid artistic background to his illustrations, raising the genre to a new level. While today’s story features Captain Henry Morgan, it is a total work of fiction. Welsh author Arthur Machen pioneered the world of Gothic fiction, spanning the distance between Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. This particular work of classic horror is instrumental in employing the triggering device of occultism, as well as using several different points of view to build a story. This use of various letters to build a cohesive narrative was also used by Victorian authors Wilkie Collins in The Moonstone, Bram Stoker in Dracula, and later by H.P. Lovecraft in The Call of Cthulhu. The concept of a veil that is lifted to reveal a “world elsewhere” is also a common Victorian story device, as used by George Eliot in “The Lifted Veil”. Machen moved them all forward. First published in 1890, it is interesting to consider that when the story’s editor, Clarke, is compiling his volume of proof of the existence of the Devil, he assiduously refrains from using published works. Thank you so much! In the spirit of the Olympics, I thought I’d share about how I won a medal for wrestling. Yes, in my youth, I was a wrestler. Mostly because I couldn’t dribble, catch, hit, shoot, or pass. But as a clumsy little 8-year-old in a singlet, I was a pretty below average wrestler. This surprised no one. But once I won a medal.  I don’t know if you’ve noticed how the bracket system works, but in these competitions of grit and technique, if you win, you go in to the winner’s bracket, and fight more winners. Losers drop to the loser’s bracket where they duke it out for second place. The thing with this gladiator display was that once I lost my first match, there was no one else in my weight class to wrestle. So, I automatically made it to the end. Every time a new match was announced, there was nobody there. So, I advanced. Until it was all over, and I was given a third place medal. For losing. And honestly, it felt kinda good.
