They are accountable for things like Quaker weddings, setting policies, supporting local meetings, and appointing people to positions of responsibility. The Cadbury Family - A significant Quaker family who founded the well-known Cadbury chocolate company in the 1800s. Their strong Quaker beliefs led them to campaign for social reform, and informed their philanthropist business practices. ‘Convinced’ - A term used to describe Friends who have come to Quakerism, rather than being born into a Quaker family (also known as ‘birthright Quakers’). Epilogue - A shorter period of worship held in the evenings. Friends - Another name for Quakers. Friends in Residence (FIR) - The core of the Quaker community at Woodbrooke who act as coordinators of meeting for worship, epilogue and out of hours support. Gathered Meeting - A term for a particularly moving, connected, and deeply spiritual Meeting for Worship. JYM - Junior Yearly Meeting, or JYM, is a body and a yearly gathering for Quakers aged 14-17 based in the UK. Also known as the “Inward Light”, it can be a metaphor used more broadly for spiritual experience, the spirit within us, or divine love. “Meeting” - Meeting for Worship/Quaker Meeting; One of the central ways that Quakers worship. British Quakers gather together in silence but all present can speak if really moved to; there are no set hymns, prayers and sermons, or ministers and creeds. Margaret Fell - An early Quaker, and one of the founders of Quakerism. She was one of the “Valiant Sixty”, and campaigned against the persecution of Quakers at the time, for gender equality, and for women’s religious leadership. Meeting House - A purpose built venue used for Meeting for Worship and other Quaker activities. Membership - The formal process of becoming a member of the Society of Friends in which an application is put to Area Meeting. Ministry - Although Meeting is usually held in silence in the UK, sometimes people are moved to share aloud what they feel, also known as 'ministry'. Anyone can give ministry, including visitors.
